The locally very Popular in Tibet Mt. Gurla Mandhata, the local inhabitants call it the Namo Nanyi meaning "Fairy's Peak" massif makes up part of the western section on the Himalayan lying in the Burang Country of Tibet. It’s a close neighbour to the sacred holy Mountain in Tibet the Mt Kailash, which lies to its north. Mt Gurla Mandhata is made up of six ridges. The west ridge is shaped like a fan and stretched across from north to south, while the eroded east ridge forms extremely steep cliffs. Also to the north lies the holy lake Manasorover and Langatso.
Mt Gurla Mandhata was first climbed in 1985 by a Sino Japanese expedition. Until now there were just 5 successful ascent have been made & according to the recent date available a French expedition team has made the successful summit of the Mt Gurla Mandata. This is rather amazing given the fact that the mountain was attempted as early as 1902.
The ascent takes place on the northern slope through the Zalompa glacier. Gurla Mandhata's base camp is situated on the glacier of 5600m. high. The way to the ascent goes via Zalonpa glacier from the Northern slope. From Top of the Gurla Mandata we can see the beautiful of sparking lakes Manasarovar and Rakchays (Demon) tal can be seen along with mountain Kailash on it's back ground. The climbing is relatively safe with the route crossing the left side of the glacier to reach a plateau under the summit's ridge.
